The part of Trinculo was due to be played by Paul Chahidi. Tragically, during the final dress rehersal Paul fell and broke his ankle. With just three and a half hours notice, artistic director Mark Rylance stepped in to fill the breach, and despite having to read his lines from a script, managed a masterful performance for the opening night which delighted the audience. Mark Rylance remained in the role of Trinculo for three extremely memorable performances. The role was then passed onto to Steven Alvey who last performed at the Globe in 1996 in The Two Gentlemen of Verona. Irrespective of his replacement however, at this time my thoughts are with Paul who not only has to overcome his physical injury, but also the bitter disapointment of missing out on being a part of what is shaping up to be an excellant production. |
